What a question, right?!
PR is not dead, or what do you think? We just have to stop thinking that PR is a magic bullet or whatever. A lot of companies are looking more into the Social Media to enhance the clients visibility out in the marketplace. PR is communication and Social Media is a new form of communication. We can also ask ourselves questions like, is the newspaper dead? Has journalism a future? Has TV killed the radio?
Every generation is growing up with different communication channels, there will be new communication canals in every society or technology spawns. At the moment we think that we invented the ultimate channel, but that is not true. Facebook will fade, MySpace will fade, blogging will fade,Twitter will fade etc. But when? I don't know.
When I am talking about new news media, I am talking about Twitter/Facebook/MySpace, etc. I am on Twitter since a month, I build mine because I wanted to extend my network. I was looking around Twitter and I was really excited to find a list with 100 PR people that you can follow on Twitter. So follow wisely and never be afraid of unfollowing someone, Twitter is the most casual of all networks. In these days you can follow anybody, anywhere and anyplace. In my opinion Twitter is a very usefull tool. At the moment you can't find me on the list, but just give me a few years and I will be on the list :)

All good things have to come to an end

This comment might be a bit out of the topic "PR" in Australia, but I write it anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe foreign minister in Sweden, Carl Bildt, he is actually no more informing news papers or other foreign ministeries and ministers (and other who might be interested) for example about his trips abroad via different kind of newsletters or e-post, he just told them to read his blogg! He gives all the information needed there.
Well that was an impressive, long list. Nice to know about it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I thought that your post would have been even more interesting, if you had brought up one or two Australian PR people who have had something really interesting on Twitter recently. We can of course search them ourselves, but it is a long list...
Is PR useful? When you read a few Helsingin Sanomat, you'll quickly realise that professional PR is something that is expected from every bigger organization nowadays, at least in Finland: if there is a smaller or bigger problem, one topic which seems to arise every time is the lack of communication. So PR is very much needed today, it has been and it will be. And especially in times of social media - people want to be able to have a direct contact to the organization (no newspapers or stuff mediating there)!
ReplyDeleteThat Twitter list is impressive. I've been resisting Twitter, but after examples like this, I'm starting to get a bit interested about it... :D
Akviliina's example about Carl Bildt is interesting. Media in Finland often uses blogs as sources as well.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing you on that list. :)
